During the complimentary initial evaluation we encourage you to ask Dr. Cavanagh any questions you may have about your teeth and about orthodontic treatment. Dr. Cavanagh will perform a thorough evaluation and determine the need for orthodontic correction as well as the best time to begin your treatment. If treatment is recommended, we will help you to schedule the necessary appointments.

During the orthodontic work-up appointment, we will gather the necessary information to come up with a treatment plan that is right for you. We will obtain photographs of your face and teeth, radiographs (x-rays), and dental molds. For your convenience, this may be done during the initial visit or you may schedule a separate appointment. Once the above information is gathered, Dr. Cavanagh will be able to prepare your individual orthodontic treatment plan. We will then schedule a consultation appointment where Dr. Cavanagh will review with you the specifics about the dental problems, your treatment options, the duration of treatment, and your financial responsibility.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. Interceptive treatment is recommended to prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Through interceptive treatment Dr. Cavanagh will be able to guide jaw growth, lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct harmful oral habits, improve appearance, guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position, and improve the way the lips meet.

Braces

Problems that involve the alignment of the teeth, how the jaws function, and how the top and bottom teeth fit together are corrected during comprehensive orthodontic treatment. The ideal time to begin treatment is when the lower primary molars are loose - before all of the permanent teeth have erupted.
When people think about comprehensive treatment, they usually think of "braces". "Braces" are a combination of brackets and wires that attach to the teeth to help control tooth movement. The most common type of braces are the metal braces made of stainless steel. Our patients have fun with the metal braces because we offer a wide assortment of colored elastic ties that are placed on the braces at each visit. Ceramic braces which are clear and nearly invisible offer a more esthetic alternative to the traditional metal braces.

Invisalign is another way of moving your teeth to align them or correct your bite. Invisalign uses a series of nearly undetectable aligners instead of brackets and wires to straighten your teeth. Because it is removable, you can continue to eat your favorite foods while brushing and flossing in your usual manner. Not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign treatment, but as a certified Invisalign provider, Dr. Cavanagh can determine if Invisalign is right for you.
